Advanced Medical Dosimetry Course

An Intensive Three Day Training Program
Course Overview
Radiation therapy has become progressively more complex as our ability to accurately define treatment volumes has improved, calculation techniques for treatment planning in three dimensions has improved and treatment delivery capabilities have become more sophisticated. Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) combine all these improvements to allow higher treatment doses to more irregular tumor volumes with the promise to improve patient outcomes.
This course will address the implementation of these technologies to the treatment of multiple disease sites. Emphasis will be placed on the clinical and technical dosimetry issues for a successful IMRT program. Related technologies, such as TomoTherapy and CyberKnife, will be covered in brief to update the attendee on these tools. The attendee is expected to know the basics of 3D conformal planning and plan evaluation as taught in the MTMI 12-day Dosimetrist Course.
Who Should Attend
This course covers dosimetry issues in IMRT and discusses the use of IGRT where appropriate. Dosimetrists with IMRT planning as part of their workload, physician residents and physicists new to IMRT will find this course of practical assistance. Dosimetrists should have at least six months full-time experience in 3D planning or the equivalent part-time experience. Persons completing the
12-day Dosimetrist Course, with at least six months clinical experience, may take this course to cover IMRT in more detail.
Educational Objectives
At the completion of this program,
participants will be able to:
  • Identify appropriate imaging modalities including strengths and weaknesses for Brain, Lung, and Breast IMRT treatment planning.
  • Identify appropriate simulation and image guided techniques for multiple disease sites, including use of image fusion.
  • Identify appropriate targets and avoidance structures for CNS, lung, GI and breast IMRT.
  • Discuss several means of gating and disease sites where applied.
  • Demonstrate the use of two types of Dose Volume Histogram (DVH) data to evaluate plans.
  • Spot problems in a plan and correct them based on common dosimetric themes that occur when creating an IMRT treatment plan.
  • Discuss issues in quality assurance and control measurements for IMRT verification.
  • Identify the concepts behind and the differences between TomoTherapy treatment planning and conventional IMRT.
  • List several disease sites appropriated for proton therapy.
