Course Overview

This 2 day course is a comprehensive review of the role of bone densitometry in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. The course will cover the technology, clinical applications, interpretation of results, clinical procedures, handling of problem cases, safety, quality assurance and the establishment and operation of a bone densitometry service. A hands-on workshop demonstration of clinical bone densitometry units is included in the curriculum.
This course is appropriate for anyone wanting to learn about bone densitometry including technologists, physicians, managers and allied health personnel. It would also be useful for individuals from companies offering products related to bone densitometry. The course will be useful to those setting-up, managing or operating a bone densitometry service as well as those preparing to take a certification exam, such as offered by the ISCD or ARRT.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course,
participants will:

Describe the pathology & physiology of osteoporosis.
Review the risks factors involved in the development of osteoporosis.
Describe how to generate a useful DXA report.
Understand T & Z scores and their significance in the diagnosis of osteoporosis.
Participate and learn bone density software analysis.
Understand the principles of photon absorptiometry.
Participate in a review for the certification exam.
Gain insight and appreciation of DXA analysis in order to minimize errors in performing DXA scans and interpretations.

Course Credit

This course provides 16 hours of category A continuing education credit for the radiologic technologists recognized by the ARRT and various licensure states. A certificate of attendance will be provided for each individual upon completion of this course. Attendees must attend the entire course to receive full credit.
