About this Workshop
With its flexibility, low cost, speed, and mobility, ultrasound has
established itself as a primary screening tool in the emergency
department (ED), ICU and urgent care settings. The imaging
capability of ultrasound allows for quick diagnosis during triage
and helps make critical life-saving decisions, such as the need for
surgery or further imaging techniques. By mixing obstetrical,
abdomen, vascular, renal, gallbladder and scanning of other
anatomical sites, ultrasound can be a key player when every second
counts. The faculty members for this workshop are board certified in
emergency medicine and in ultrasound scanning. They have extensive
experience teaching this technology both in residency/fellowship
programs and to practicing clinicians in the field. The workshop is
organized to provide instruction in each area of application
followed by plenty of hands-on scanning in small groups with live
models under guidance of the faculty. A presentation on
reimbursement for Emergency Ultrasound will also be provided during
Tuesday’s reception.
The target audience is physicians working in emergency departments,
intensive care units, urgent care facilities and other areas where
these skills would be of benefit. Residents, Fellows and
Sonographers practicing in these fields will also benefit.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this workshop,
attendees will:
- Have reviewed the selection of equipment necessary to begin a successful emergency ultrasound program.
- Have reviewed how to establish a quality assurance process and how to report, document and archive images for both teaching and clinical use.
- Have an enhanced understanding of the basic principles of ultrasound.
- Have applied these principles to the reduction of common artifacts and improvement of high quality diagnostic ultrasound images.
- Understand the sonographic landmarks and anatomical relationships of the heart, liver, spleen and bladder using the Fast Exam technique.
- Be able to demonstrate the ability to identify and visualize areas of potential intra-abdominal and thoracic spaces in which free fluid collect.
- Understand the sonographic findings and pitfalls for identifying life threatening, trauma conditions.
- Provide a sequenced approach to ultrasound in the medical shock patient.
- Be able to demonstrate the surface landmarks and transducer position necessary to perform a 7-Up scan.
- Have reviewed causes and potential responses to treatments of hypotension and tissue malperfusion.
- Understand the sonographic windows and landmarks of the aorta, kidney, and gallbladder.
- Understand the sonographic findings and pitfalls for identifying pathology of the aorta, kidney and gallbladder.
- Be able to describe the surface landmarks and transducer position necessary to perform transabdominal and endovaginal ultrasound examinations of
the pelvis.
- Have performed an endovaginal ultrasound scan on a model patient demonstrating correct scanning technique.
