About this Seminar
Osteoporosis is a major health problem that affects more than 50
million people (of which 80% are women) in the U.S. The “Gold
Standard” of diagnosis for osteoporosis and bone health status
continues to be Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) which is the
most accurate and precise method to determine bone strength (bone
mineral density) in a clinical setting. This seminar will provide
attendees with up-to-date information on the use of DXA and how to
maximize its’ clinical utility for baseline and serial
determinations in all types of patients. Attendees will obtain a
solid foundation in all details of the use and analysis of bone
densitometry as well as understanding osteoporosis. This seminar
will provide a focused guide for those preparing for the ARRT or
ISCD Bone Densitometry Certification Examinations. This seminar will
highlight topics within the certification exams and mock registry
exams will be given/reviewed during the day. In addition, all
aspects of bone health management will be discussed throughout the
seminar. Participants are encouraged to bring their DXA questions,
problematic DXA scans and other related issues for open discussion.

Educational Objectives
At the completion of this seminar,
participants will:
- Be prepared to perform successfully on the ARRT and/or the ISCD Bone Densitometry Certification Exam.
-
- Learn to identify and analyze normal anatomical and pathological abnormalities seen in bone densitometry images.
-
- Understand methods to maintain and determine the precision and accuracy of DXA instruments.
-
- Appreciate the ability to perform serial bone density measurements and determine rate of change analyses.
-
- Understand the proper positioning for all regions of interest in a DXA exam.
-
- Be able to determine rates of change in BMD between DXA’s of different manufacturers.
-
- Be able to compose and interpret in a critical fashion, the patient intake form for all individuals referred for a DXA exam.

About the Instructor
|
|
Michael T. DiMuzio, PhD
|
|
Michael T. DiMuzio, Ph.D. is the founder and president of Bone
Health Management, Inc. as well as the Executive director of
The North Shore Osteoporosis Center within the Ravinia
Associates in Internal Medicine in Highland Park Illinois. BHM
began operation in the year 2000 as an independent diagnostic
and research operation. From 1996 to 2000, Dr. DiMuzio began
and directed The Osteoporosis Prevention and Research Center
of Highland Park Hospital near Chicago, honored as the first
“Center of Excellence” in bone health education and
diagnostics in the U.S.
He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Northwestern
University and has been an active scientist in bone metabolic
disorders and related topics for more than thirty years. He
was an NIH and Fogarty Research Fellow at the University of
Bern in Switzerland, and has held faculty appointments at the
University of Alabama at Birmingham, Rush Medical College,
and, most recently, Northwestern University.
In addition to his roles as executive director and president
with Bone Health Management, Dr. DiMuzio is an instructor for
the Medical Technology Management Institute for whom he has
lectured around the U.S. and Canada on osteoporosis and bone
densitometry since 2002. He is an active member of the
Scientific Advisory Board of the National Osteoporosis
Foundation in Chicago and has published more than 75
scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and edited
texts. He has lectured around the world on topics related to
osteoporosis, bone densitometry, and advances in the
diagnostics of bone metabolic diseases, such as ultrasound and
bone biochemical markers.

Seminar Credit
|
|
The Medical Technology Management Institute (MTMI) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education for
physicians.
MTMI designates this educational activity for a maximum of
6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Each physician should
claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their
participation in the activity. It also provides 8 hours of
Category A continuing education credit recognized by the
ARRT for radiologic technologists.
