Essentials of Bone Densitometry
8 Hours ARRT Category A Credit
Charles R. Wilson, PhD, FACR
|
|
About this Seminar
Osteoporosis affects more than 28 million people at a cost of more than $18 billion
annually. It is a very debilitating and painful disease resulting from loss of
mineral from the bone. In the past few years, pharmaceuticals have become available
that help rebuild bone mass, but finding the disease and monitoring therapeutic
progress are essential to their use.
This seminar is about the measurement of bone density. Improving your knowledge in
this important and growing area will provide a better understanding of the
appropriate use and interpretation of this technology.
|
Educational Objectives
At the completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:
- Explain and review the basic principles of bone densitometers.
- Identify the pencil, fan, and area beam bone densitometers.
- State the advantages and disadvantages of axial and peripheral
densitometers.
- Explain factors that determine bone density in vivo.
- State risk factors for bone loss and fractures.
- Identify the causes and definition of osteoporosis and the World Health
Organization criteria for osteoporosis and osteopenia.
- Explain the clinical quality assurance and instrument quality control
procedures.
- State the meaning of T-scores and Z-scores.
- Identify the basic principles of quantitative ultrasonometry.

Who Should Attend
|
|
This seminar is for health care professionals working with patients suspected
of having osteoporosis and candidates for bone densitometry measurements.
This includes residents, technologists, nurses and other health care
professionals interested in this technology.
It would serve as an introductory course for physicians new to the field.
This seminar would also provide good preparation for those preparing for the
ARRT subspecialty examination for bone densitometry.

About the Instructor
|
 |
Charles R. Wilson, PhD, FACR
|
|
Dr. Wilson is an Associate Professor of Radiology and Head of the
Medical Physics Section at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He has worked in
the field of bone densitometry for over twenty-five years and is one of the
original developers of dual energy photon absorptiometry.
He served as president of the 13th International Bone Densitometry Workshop
held in the United States.
Chuck has published numerous papers and given many presentations on the topic
of bone densitometry and brings all his knowledge and experience of this area
to this seminar.

|
Seminar Credit
|
|
This program provides 8 hours of Category A continuing education credit for
radiologic technologists recognized by the ARRT and various licensure states.
A certificate of attendance will be provided for each individual upon
completion of the seminar. All attendees must attend the entire seminar to
receive full credit.
