The Evolution to All-Digital Radiography
8 Hours ARRT Category A Credit
Russell L. Cain, MA, MS, CRA, RT(R)(CT)
About this Seminar
A quick perusal of the topics offered at the annual meetings of SIIM (formerly SCAR), AHRA, RSNA and other professional organizations associated with Imaging and Information Technologies reflect the continuing emphasis on digital imaging as the “Radiology Department of the future”. The future is now!
Computed Radiography (CR) and Digital Radiography (DR) are rapidly replacing traditional film-based systems. This seminar will introduce the issues involved in implementing and working with CR and DR. The impact on work process and the technologists who are involved in using these technologies will be presented. The discussions encountered in this seminar will limit the “computer-speak” and will draw upon the traditional language of imaging technologists to describe the basic workings of CR, DR and PACS.
The effects on radiography techniques, equipment, and the practice of medical imaging technology will be discussed. The question “How is the evolution of digital imaging and information systems affecting quality control, staffing, training of technologists, and support staff requirements?” will be answered. The requirement for standardization of systems will be addressed.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:
  • Define both CR and DR, and describe the advantages and potential disadvantages of each.

  • Describe the changes in radiographic techniques associated with CR and DR.

  • Describe the issues involved in using CR and/or DR in the PACS environment.

  • Define each and describe the relationship between PACS, HIS and RIS.

  • Describe the impact of digital imaging on the traditional radiology service, including changes in work-flow, expenses involved in medical imaging, changes in staffing requirements, and impact on knowledge requirements of the Imaging Technologist.

  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of CRT versus LCD display in the Medical Imaging Environment.

About the Instructor
Russell L. Cain, MA, MS, CRA, RT(R)(CT)
Russ Cain is an active radiologic technologist who is currently the Director of Diagnostic Imaging at Haywood Regional Medical Center in Clyde, North Carolina where he has gained extensive experience managing the transition to digital imaging. Russ is one of the initial group of Certified Radiology Administrators, certified by the American Healthcare Radiology Administrators. He is an educator who holds multiple graduate degrees and has taught psychology and management in undergraduate and graduate programs. Russ is a scuba instructor and is pursuing a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and Business Administration. This diverse background facilitates an uncommon insight into the issues of taking radiology into the electronic age, an insight he will share with the attendees of this seminar.
Seminar Credit
This seminar provides 8 hours of Category A continuing education credit for radiologic technologists recognized by the ARRT and various licensure states. A certificate of attendance will be provided for each individual upon completion of the course. All attendees must attend the entire course to receive full credit.
