About this Seminar
Radiation therapy has become progressively more complex as our
ability to accurately define treatment volumes has improved,
calculational techniques of planning treatments in 3 dimensions has
improved and treatment delivery capabilities have become more
sophisticated. Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) combines
all these improvements to allow higher treatment doses to more
irregular tumor volumes with the promise to improve patient
outcomes.
This seminar will address the practical implementation of this
technology in the community cancer treatment center setting.
Emphasis will be on the clinical and technical issues for a
successful IMRT program. Hands-on demonstrations of IMRT target
delineation and treatment planning will be included in the
program.
|
Educational Objectives
At the completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Comparisons between various techniques for IMRT and conformal radiation therapy techniques.
- Step by step procedures for implementing various IMRT approaches.
- Clinical indications and consequences of IMRT.
- Definition of clinical target volumes.
- Procedures for assuring quality and accuracy of IMRT treatments.
- Issues related to reimbursement for IMRT.

Presentations in the seminar will be given in lecture format
using audio-visual materials. Hands-on demonstration workshops
using IMRT planning systems and workshops on target
delineation for IMRT treatments are also included in the
program. A syllabus with supporting information for each
presentation will be provided as well as a CD-ROM containing
all presentations.

The Medical Technology Management Institute (MTMI) is
accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical
Education for physicians. MTMI designates this educational
activity for a maximum of 14.5 category 1 credits toward the
AMA Physicians Recognition Award. Each physician should claim
only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.
Approval has been received from CAMPEP for up to 14.5 hours of
Medical Physics Continuing Education Credit (MPCEC) for
qualified medical physicists. Up to 15.5 hours credit has also
been approved for dosimetrists by the MDCB; 16 hours category
A accepted by the ARRT has been approved for radiation
therapists.
