About This Seminar
Mammography continues to be the most effective line of defense
against breast cancer. Survival is significantly enhanced by the
early detection and treatment of malignant breast lesions. The
Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) was enacted to insure high
quality mammography by all facilities offering this service. Medical
physicists play an important role in assisting facilities to comply
with these regulations. In this years’ program we will review
current testing procedures and requirements and update you with the
latest state-of-the-art technology in the field. Representatives of
the major digital mammography vendors will participate in a forum on
QC procedures for their units and answer your questions as well.
Attendance at this seminar will meet the MQSA continuing education
requirement for medical physicists in digital and film-screen
mammography. Three hours on stereotactic breast biopsy and two hour
on Digital Breast Tomosynthesis are also included.

Educational Objectives
The educational objectives
of this program are to:
- Review practical tips for performing mammography machine surveys.
- Learn the clinical procedures and problems of stereotactic breast biopsies.
- Become familiar with the latest technology developments for digital mammography systems.
- Become familiar with the clinical aspects of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
- Review the QC testing procedures required for each manufacturers digital mammography unit.
- Become familiar with progress to establish uniform QC testing procedures for FFDM units.
- Review stereotactic breast biopsy machine testing procedures and results.

Seminar Format
|
|
Each session/presentation in the seminar will be given in
lecture format using audio-visual materials. Supporting
material for each presentation will be provided by a printed
syllabus and in digital format on CD-ROM. The exchange of
practical experience between faculty members and attendees is
encouraged. Attendees are invited to bring to the seminar
issues and problems they have encountered in mammography unit
testing as well as any tips and tricks they have developed to
enhance the testing process.

Who Should Attend
|
|
This seminar is for medical physicists wanting to review and
learn more about the technical aspects of mammography as well
as obtain the continuing education credits required by the
MQSA regulations and ACR mammography facility accreditation. It
is also appropriate for state and federal mammography facility
inspectors, medical physics assistants, medical physics
students, residents and fellows, biomedical engineers, vendor
personnel, experienced technologists, and others interested in
the physics of mammography.

|
Conference Credit
|
|
This activity is designed to provide 15 hours of continuing
education in mammography. The seminar series has been
submitted for approval by CAMPEP for Medical Physics
Continuing Education Credit (MPCEC) for qualified medical
physicists. The program includes 9.25 hours training on the
surveying of digital mammography units, 3 hours on surveying
stereotactic breast biopsy units and 2 hours on digital breast
tomosynthesis (DBT).
An application for Category A continuing
education credit for radiologic technologists recognized by
the ARRT has been filed.
