Orthopedic Radiography: Disease Processes and Pathology
8 Hours ARRT Category A Credit
Paul F. Laudicina, M.A., R.T.(R), BCFE, DABFE, FACFE
About this Seminar
Though x-ray is widely used for diagnosis of fractures and diseases of the skeletal apparatus, orthopedic applications in radiography remain the most challenging procedures for both junior and well-experienced technologists. Knowledge of the pathological process of the fracture described in the examination requisition is key to the quality of care and diagnostic exam the patient receives. Image quality requirements for bone and joint diseases will always vary. It is important that technologists have a good knowledge of patient conditions to properly execute examinations. For example, degenerative or additive bone pathologies require different techniques.
This seminar will help technologists improve their techniques and care for pediatric patients as well as adult. Fracture mechanisms and observation techniques will be reviewed, as well as a thorough review of skeletal anatomy and physiology.
Educational Objectives
At the completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:
  • list and differentiate the three major types of arthropathy
  • list four major pediatric skeletal disorders
  • describe two types of treatment for congenital clubfoot
  • describe three reference lines used in the diagnosis of developmental hip dysplasia
  • describe three clinical signs of osteogenesis imperfecta
  • describe two clinical signs of structural idiopathic scoliosis
  • describe the radiologic protocol for structural scoliosis
  • describe five fracture patterns found in long bones
