About this Seminar
This program addresses the different options for the detection of breast cancer. Topics covered include stereotactic and ultrasound guided biopsy procedures, breast anatomy, positioning, sonographic appearance of lesions, scanning techniques and imaging tricks. The connection between mammography skills and breast biopsy will also be discussed. ACR requirements for personnel, quality assurance and clinical image filming will be covered.
Educational Objectives
At the completion of this seminar,
participants will be able to:

  • Understand the stereotactic approach for biopsies, the clinical indications of and the practical use of the Mammotome breast biopsy device.
  • Understand the sonographic approach for core biopsies, the clinical indications of ultrasound, lesion appearance, and practical use of this technique.
  • Understand the use of the Mammotome hand-held ultrasound biopsy device.
  • Describe lesion types.
  • Apply techniques for proper patient positioning with mammograms, as well as problematic patients and difficult lesions.
  • Understand the importance of accurate record keeping
  • Understand the requirements of ACR for personnel, quality assurance, and clinical image films.

Who Should Attend
This seminar will be helpful for radiologic technologists, breast biopsy coordinators, nurses, and allied health personnel who are directly or indirectly involved in providing breast needle biopsy procedures using the stereotactic or ultrasound guided techniques. It will also be of interest to technologists and others working in women’s imaging services interested in learning more about these procedures. If you are presently using these techniques, planning to add this capability to your service or are interested in becoming accredited, this seminar is for you.
About the Instructors

Mary Ostrich, CRT(R)(M)
and Patricia Hawley, CRT(R)(M)
Both Mary and Pat are working technologists who have been performing mammography for approximately 30 years. Mary is a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia. Pat is a graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Both are RT (R) (M), in California and have advanced certification in mammography from the ARRT. They have an extensive background in teaching both students and technologists, as well as conducting seminars in the community.
Seminar Credit
This program provides 8 hours of SDMS continuing education credit for sonographers and 8 hours of Category A credit for radiologic technologists. A certificate of attendance will be provided to each individual upon completion of the seminar. Individuals must attend the entire seminar to receive full credit. Credit is awarded for sonographers and radiologic technologists as SDMS or ARRT Category A Credit approved by the SDMS, and credit from various licensure states.

Refunds, minus a $30 processing fee, will be granted for cancellations received at least 3 days prior to the seminar. Cancellations received within 3 days of the seminar will receive a credit toward a future MTMI seminar, minus the $30 processing fee. No refunds will be made after the seminar.
