Stereotactic Breast Biopsy: Principles, Practices and Precautions

8 Hours Category A Credit
Holley Strandlund, RT(R)(M)
About this Seminar
Stereotactic breast biopsy can be used to make a diagnosis when imaging studies indicate a mass, microcalcifications, or an area of abnormal tissue change. Stereotactic biopsy offers a minimally invasive alternative to open surgical biopsy, especially when no lump can be felt on breast examination. Learn about several types of biopsy instruments and methods that utilize x-ray guidance. Use of film-screen and digital imaging will be discussed. Current ACR recommendations, the status of changing requirements for personnel, quality assurance and clinical image will be covered.
Educational Objectives
At the completion of this seminar,
participants will be able to:

  • List the components of stereotactic imaging system.
  • Understand the importance of accounting for lesion shift parallax.
  • Describe biopsy options and devices available for each.
  • Understand how to analyze the different probe positioning errors.
  • Describe features of interest that can be evaluated in high quality pre-fire and post-fire images.
