About this Program

Stereotactic and ultrasound breast biopsies are used to obtain pathologic information from mammographic areas of suspicion. When a mass, microcalcifications, or area of abnormal tissue change exists; stereotactic and ultrasound breast biopsy offers a minimally invasive alternative to open surgical biopsy, often before a mass develops.


This course offers the attendee the opportunity to learn the basics and tricks of the trade from experienced instructors with multi-vendor competence. Our instructors are excited and willing to share this knowledge to help bridge the gaps in training so that optimum performance becomes your daily mode of operation. Hands-on labs make this course refreshingly unique.

Critical thinking becomes possible once attendees understand why and how these procedures are done rather than “This is how we have always done it”. In addition to covering quality assurance and patient documentation, the two-day course reviews the ACR and ASBrS accreditation requirements and fulfills the credits required for accreditation.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain and provide an overview of biopsy options for detection of breast cancer
  • Discuss the differences in biopsy needles and stereo tables
  • Clarify the difference between polar and Cartesian coordinate systems
  • Describe the components of the stereo images and how they work together
  • Demonstrate the importance of needle position in correlation to the area of interest in stereotactic breast biopsy procedures
  • Formulate problem solving skills when faced with difficult scenarios in breast biopsy techniques
  • Demonstrate proper patient positioning for stereotactic biopsy procedures
  • Review the importance of QA , ACR and ASBrS  requirements to help improve patient care and daily maintenance of your center
  • Review breast ultrasound algorithm and terminology
  • Review ultrasound and mammographic correlation
  • Demonstrate how to use ultrasound equipment and minimally invasive techniques to accomplish ultrasound guided breast biopsy procedures
  • Discuss the importance of accurate tissue samples for the most precise diagnosis
  • Identify high quality tissue and why it leads to high quality diagnosis

Dr. Alisa Sumkin

Dr. Alisa Sumkin

DO

Dr. Sumkin is a diagnostic radiologist who specializes in breast imaging. She currently works at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, PA. She completed her medical school training at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She went on to complete a diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Pittsburgh which was followed by a fellowship in Women’s Imaging, also at the University of Pittsburgh. She is passionate about patient care and education in addition to medical school and residency teaching.

Dr. Gomez is a fellowship trained breast surgical oncologist and the director of the high risk breast cancer program at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, PA.  She provides expert, compassionate care that is personalized for each patient's needs and is dedicated to improving the lives and outcomes of patients at high risk of developing breast cancer.  She is fellowship trained and has expertise in a comprehensive range of surgeries for patients with malignant and benign disease as well those at high risk of developing breast cancer, including breast-conserving surgery, nipple sparing mastectomy, resensation surgery and oncoplastic surgery. Dr. Gomez completed her general surgery residency at Inspira Health Network in Vineland, New Jersey. She then completed her breast surgical oncology fellowship at Allegheny Health Network where she chose to stay and is practicing today.

MD

Alex Bousamra, M.D. is a Staff Pathologist with a focus on breast pathology at Alleghany Health Network, and Assistant Professor at Drexel University College of Medicine in Pittsburg, PA.  Dr. Bousamra graduated medical school at the American University of Beirut in 2007. He completed her Breast Pathology Fellowship (2015) and Surgical Pathology Fellowship (2014) at the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. Dr. Bousamra has many publications and presented lectures on breast pathology and breast cancer treatment.

Kaylyn has been a registered Ultrasound Technologist since 2015, and has been a dedicated breast ultrasound technologist since 2017. She attended ABUS training in 2020, and obtained her ARDMS breast boards in 2021. She currently works at the Breast Center at Allegheny General Hospital, alongside Dr. Sumkin.

Cancellation Policy

“Hands-On” Courses

Refunds, minus a $50 processing fee, will be granted for cancellations received prior to 10 days before the program. Cancellations received within 10 days of the program will receive a credit toward a future MTMI program, minus the $50 processing fee. No refunds will be made after the program starts. MTMI reserves the right to cancel any scheduled program because of low advance registration or other reasons. MTMI’s liability is limited to a refund of any program tuition paid. MTMI recommends that attendees use refundable airline tickets. In case of cancellation of a program for any reason, MTMI is not responsible for travel costs incurred by attendees including non-refundable airline tickets.
